Bland–Altman analysis revealed relative underestimation of spatiotemporal variables by the smartphone application compared to the motion system. Pearson correlations were low-to-very high between methods ( r range, 0.45–0.99). The smartphone application demonstrated moderate-to-excellent intraclass correlation coefficients for reliability between-system (ICC range, 0.56–0.99), -limb (ICC range, 0.62–0.99) and -device (ICC range, 0.61–0.96) for gait analysis of healthy adults. The smartphone application was used to evaluate change in gait dysfunction over time within the patients’ own environment using paired t test. Second objective, 12 additional patients with total hip or knee arthroplasty (mean age, 58.7 ± 6.5 years 58% males mean body mass index, 28.9 ± 5.8 kg/m ² ) were measured at 2- and 10 weeks postoperatively. Agreement was assessed by the Bland–Altman method. Validity was determined by Pearson correlations. Reliability was determined by intraclass correlation coefficients. Secondary purpose was to determine the feasibility of measuring gait dysfunction, limitation in spatiotemporal characteristics, longitudinally in patients following total hip or knee arthroplasty.įirst objective, 20 healthy adults (mean age, 42.3 ± 19.7 years 60% males mean body mass index, 29.0 ± 5.2 kg/m ² ) underwent gait analysis under four gait conditions (self-selected gait speed, fixed gait speed at 0.8 m/s, fixed gait speed at 2.0 m/s and self-selected gait speed with dual task) for the validity and reliability of the smartphone to the motion laboratory. Primary purpose of this study was to determine the validity and reliability of the OneStep smartphone application in healthy adults. Careful interpretation is required when using the Health app in children and when measuring DST in general, as both have shown limited validity and/or reliability. The Health app on iPhone is reliable and valid for measuring GS and SL in adults and seniors. Consistency between repeated measurements was good to excellent for all gait parameters in adults/seniors, and moderate to good for GS and DST but poor for SL in children. Agreement of the Health App with the APDM Mobility Lab was good for GS in all age groups and for SL in adults/seniors, but poor to moderate for DST in all age groups and for SL in children. Test–retest reliability was assessed via a second iPhone-instrumented 6MWT 1 week later. Gait parameters were simultaneously collected with an inertial sensors system (APDM Mobility Lab) to assess concurrent validity. Gait speed (GS), step length (SL), and double support time (DST) were extracted from the gait recordings of the Health app. Twenty-seven children, 28 adults and 28 seniors equipped with an iPhone completed a 6-min walk test (6MWT). In such cases, select the answer you would most likely choose if you ever found yourself in such circumstances. This study assessed the concurrent validity and test–retest-reliability of the Apple Health app on iPhone for measuring gait parameters in different age groups. There may be some questions describing situations that do not apply to you. Read every statement carefully and indicate which option applies best to you. In any case, you can use the results of this test as indicators of what areas in your relationship may benefit from some reflection and work. Others, that you might not yet be conscious of, may be the source of frustration and anger that seems to come out of nowhere. You might already be aware of some of the problems that will be pointed out (if any). This test will help you identify areas that cause your relationship to stumble. In this relationship health test, YOU are the reference point: your needs, your wishes, your point of view, your values and your beliefs. However, in other aspects, what works for one couple can be a disaster for another. Some behavior patterns are generally unhealthy, either for the relationship or for the individuals involved. Unlike other relationship/love tests, the one you are about to take is not based on value judgments about how a relationship is supposed to work. This relationship health test is designed to evaluate various aspects of interaction in a couple. August also offers its own plug-in gateway device that'll let you use the app to control the lock from anywhere in the world, but you'll have to pay an extra $80 on top of the lock's already expensive $230 asking price. That makes it a pretty appealing pick for renters, or for anyone who likes the lock they've got.Īll three of these HomeKit-compatible options use Bluetooth to pair with your phone, which means that you won't be able to control or check on them if you're away from home (although if you have a third-gen or better Apple TV, it'll act as a Wi-Fi range extender and solve that problem). What's interesting about August is that it isn't actually a deadbolt, but rather, a deadbolt-turning gadget that sits over the top of your existing lock. In fact, the lock's well-designed app does a terrific job at managing multi-users, including options for limiting access to specific days and times, or for creating codes that expire after a set amount of time. But unlike the Kevo, it doesn't charge you anything extra to share access with friends, family members, roommates, and service workers. Like the Kevo, the Premis retails for a steep $230. If the deadbolt's four AA batteries ever run dead, you can touch a 9-volt battery to the bottom of the lock's exterior to give it just enough juice for you to punch in your code and step inside. That might sound like a potential problem since these smart locks are all battery-powered, but Yale came up with a clever safeguard to keep you from getting locked out if your batteries die. These latest touchscreen deadbolts take things one step further by eliminating the keyway altogether and rendering your keychain obsolete. The biggest weakness of this model is really the lack of data at high ranks and high sales- there's just the one point fixing the top end of the power law, so adding new data points can swing the total value from the fit by a few hundred copies one way or the other. Which just goes to show you the strong random element involved in the publishing business.) (Interestingly, the UK edition has shipped more than twice the number of copies the US edition did, and has been on one British chain's bestseller list for a while now. This was an amusing way to spend a few hours crunching numbers, though. It's in the right ballpark, at least- it's less than the total number printed and shipped, for example- but beyond that I don't have any useful information. How good an estimate is that? I can't really say, since I don't have BookScan numbers, and my royalty statements only give the number of copies shipped out to stores, not the copies actually sold to consumers. BookScan estimates that it covers about 75% of all sales, so that would put the total at right around 7000. Using 4800 as the estimated number, that extra 10% gets you to 5280 books (one for every foot of a one-mile stretch.). Now, comparing the fit function result with the data I have from Amazon suggests that this estimate is low by about 10% (this works for both the hardcover and the paperback numbers, and for several different subsets of those data). With that caveat, the estimated value looks to be between 40, probably toward the high end of that range. What's the total sales figure? That's a little tough to say, because the fit to the first graph is still fairly sensitive to exactly what data are included-the two fit parameters wander around a little, and because it's a power law spanning a couple of orders of magnitude, small changes in those values can lead to substantial changes in the estimated total. This gives you a rough idea of the number of copies a moderately successful pop-science book sells in the US. The resulting data look more or less like this: So, using that handy formula from the graph above, and the several months of sales ranks from the tracker, what can I say about the number of books sold? Well, after laboriously converting the ranks to approximately the same format as the data from Amazon, I can plug in the average sales rank for the hardcover for every week it was out, and use that to estimate the number of copies sold. I do, however, have reams of data from the nifty Sales Rank tracker Matthew Beckler wrote for me (which stopped working a while ago, but has been supplanted by the Amazon features, anyway. So, anyway, what good is this? Well, I know exactly how many paperbacks have been sold, thanks to Amazon's BookScan numbers, but I don't have the numbers for the hardcover. If you want to go out and buy several hundred paperbacks of How to Teach Physics to Your Dog from Amazon over the next couple of weeks, I'd be thrilled to have the data. This is obviously a little dodgy, given that there's only that one little point floating way up on the left, and to do a better job, I'd need to have lots more points with high ranks and large numbers of copies sold. According to this, to estimate the number of copies the hardcover has sold based on its Sales Rank, you would use the formula: This is a log-log plot, so those straight lines fit to the data are power laws. The one lonely point in the upper left is the sales figure for the first week of the hardcover sales, which a little bird provided for me at some point (I don't have BookScan access outside of the Amazon service). Blue points are the hardcover for How to Teach Physics to Your Dog, brick-red the paperback. the average Amazon Sales Rank for that week. This is a graph of BookScan sales data for each week vs. So, anyway, here's the data I got for How to Teach Physics to Your Dog: You'd have to be some sort of obsessive nerd to make a quantitative comparison between them. Of course, the BookScan data is very limited, giving you only four weeks, and the Sales Rank data, while available over the full published life of any given book, are presented as a graph only with no way to extract them as a data table. A few months ago- just before the paperback release of How to Teach Physics to Your Dog- Amazon started providing not only their Sales Rank data, but also sales data from Nielsen BookScan. You will find things that other people struggle with may come very naturally to you, and vice versa. With practice, you can play the piano with small hands. The most important part of playing the piano is achieving the sound you imagine. People with smaller hands have an advantage in being able to play quickly and lightly on the piano. This isn’t a problem for people with small hands since they can play at the point at which black and white keys meet. So, they have to play on the edge of keys as opposed to the inside near the fallboard which presents a big challenge having to travel in and out of the keyboard to negotiate both white and black keys. Believe it or not, some people have such large fingers, they don't fit between black keys. While there may be disadvantages to small hands, there are also tremendous benefits to having small hands for playing the piano. It’s not very difficult, and anyone can learn how to achieve this. The difference in sound is almost imperceptible when you quickly break chords you can't reach, and catch the notes on the pedal. The secret is: learning how to break chords very quickly using the pedal. You probably wonder if I have to leave out notes. But when I get into playing music with 10ths and 11ths, it requires a bigger reach then I can manage. Mine, on the other hand, are pretty much stuck where they are! At this point in my life, I have no trouble reaching an octave. But, you would never tell by the way he played Mozart Concertos, as well as demanding works of Chopin he managed just fine! I worked with Jake Clayton, who was a 10-year-old pianist at the time, who had trouble reaching an octave. It’s not impossible to approach even pieces that require playing notes far beyond your reach. If you are learning to play the piano and your hands are too small to reach an octave, you will be at some disadvantage for playing repertoire that demands a big reach. I was only able to achieve this by reaching around the sides of keys as opposed to playing from above them. I was learning music that required reaching an octave. This was a problem for me growing up and working on advanced repertoire. I don’t know if any of you have noticed, but I have small hands. Believe it or not, this is a question that is dear to my heart. The audio books are always available to subscribing libraries and their patrons. We measured the startup time for the Chromium browser with a new, unused profile. Hot start – The browser data is cached in the memory.Cold start – There is no cached data in the memory. We compared the results in the following way: Snap with LZO compression (all systems).Snap with XZ compression (all systems).Native package (DEB or RPM) where available (Kubuntu 18.04 and Fedora 32).On each of the selected systems, we examined the time it takes to launch and display the browser window for: System 4 with 4-core/8-thread Intel(R) i7(TM) processor, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe hard disk, and Nvidia GM204M (GeForce GTX 980M), running Ubuntu 20.10.System 3 with 4-core Intel(R) i3(TM) processor, 4GB RAM, 1TB 5,400rpm mechanical hard disk, and Intel(R) HD 440 graphics, running Fedora 32 Workstation.System 2 with 4-core Intel(R) i3(TM) processor, 4GB RAM, 1TB 5,400rpm mechanical hard disk, and Intel(R) HD 440 graphics, running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.System 1 with 4-core/8-thread Intel(R) i5(TM) processor, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD, and Intel(R) UHD 620 graphics, running Kubuntu 18.04.We believe this offers a good mix of hardware and software, allowing us a broader understanding of our work. We decided to conduct the testing on a range of systems (2015-2020 laptop models), including HDD, SSD and NVMe storage, Intel and Nvidia graphics, as well as several operating systems, including Kubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.10 (pre-release at the time of writing), and Fedora 32 Workstation (just before Fedora 33 release). Three, it is not part of any specific Linux desktop environment, which makes the testing independent and accurate.įor comparison, the XZ-compressed snap weighs ~150 MB, whereas the one using the LZO compression is ~250 MB in size. Two, Chromium is a relatively large and complex application. One, the browser is a ubiquitous (and popular) application, with frequent usage, so any potential slowness is likely to be noticeable. We believe this is a highly representative case, for several reasons. The LZO algorithm was selected because it offers the highest level of compatibility over a number of different use cases.Īs a test case, we chose the Chromium browser (stable build, 85.X). To improve startup times, we decided to test a different algorithm – LZO – which offers lesser compression, but needs less processing power to complete the action. Subsequent launches are fast and typically, there’s little to no difference compared to traditionally packaged applications. This is also far more noticeable on first launch only, before the application data is cached in memory. On the desktops, users may perceive this as a “slowness” – the time it takes for the application to launch. This results in a high level of compression but consequently requires more processing power to uncompress and expand the filesystem for use. Now, we want to tell you about another major milestone – the use of a new compression algorithm for snaps offers 2-3x improvement in application startup times! LZO and XZ algorithmsīy default, snaps are packaged as a compressed, read-only squashfs filesystem using the XZ algorithm. Last year, we talked about improved snap startup times following fontconfig cache optimization. We are well aware of this phenomenon, and we have invested significant effort and time in resolving any speed gaps, while keeping security in mind. Snaps are self-contained applications, with layered security, and as a result, sometimes, they may have reduced perceived performance compared to those same applications offered via traditional Linux packaging mechanisms. A great user experience is one that manages to blend the two in a way that does not compromise on robust, solid foundations of security on one hand, and a fast, responsive software interaction on the other. Security and performance are often mutually exclusive concepts. |
